The Bio-Tech Start-up, RWDC Industries Singapore has successfully developed a cost-effective solution in the form of biopolymer material. These polymers, also known as PHA (PolyHydroxyAlkanoate) or linear polymers, can be used as plastic replacement and the production is done naturally by fermentation of sugars and plant-based oils. RWDC Industries Singapore claims their PHC to be completely degradable in water, soil and marine areas, which clearly indicates that these polymers will dissolve within a week’s span without any toxic or harmful residue. The requirement of such technology is a must with the deteriorating climate conditions and dying marine life and coral reefs due to excessive plastic dumping into the ocean. The breeding grounds for fishes and turtles among other aquatic life have been transformed into dumping yards, which are leading to the disruption of the aquatic ecology, causing frequent natural disasters. The initiative by RWDC to create biodegradable polymers is a step to sustain mother earth, and in turn, save ourselves.
Robust Funding
RWDC Industries Singapore has raised USD 22 million in the ongoing series. This funding was led by Vickers Venture Partners and Us-based Eversource Retirement plan master trust. The follow up in the 2nd round of the Series A funding resulted in a whopping USD 13 million. The fresh funds are planned to be utilized to improve the production capacity of PHA. The company expects to use the funds to produce its first line of PHA straws by June of 2019.
The global recognition towards climate change and resource sustainability and with the support from the government has made it easier for RWDC Industries Singapore to swipe such high investment amounts for the global cause product. The basics of reducing, reuse and recycle remains adequate as the production and distribution around the globe may take time, and every individual makes a difference, therefore educating people about such a product is more important than higher production of the biodegradable polymer.
Road Map of RWDC Industries Singapore
RWDC Industries Singapore was founded in the year 2015 by Dr Daniel Carraway and Mr Roland Wee to start commercial production of bio-based polymers to provide a way towards a sustainable future.
The ascending time lapse (year-wise) achievements of RWDC Industries:
- In March 2017, RWDC entered into a collaborative agreement with the University of Georgia’s new material Institute to work together on the technology of biopolymers.
- In September 2017, their PHA turned out to be biodegradable in water, soil and marine areas.
- In October 2018, RWDC participated in the 2nd round of the Series A funding resulted in a whopping USD13 million.
- In April 2019, RWDC closes USD 22 million in the 3rd round of the ongoing funding.
- In June 2019, the company uses the funds to produces its first line of Solon PHA straws.
