Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, GIC, in collaboration with Meritech Capital Partners, has taken the lead in a Series C funding round for Atlan, an AI startup headquartered in San Francisco. The investment, totaling $105 million, has shown GIC’s strategic interest in supporting technology companies with plans to address critical challenges in data management within enterprises.
Focusing on features like active metadata and AI readiness, Atlan plans to streamline data governance processes and empower enterprises to navigate the complexities of modern data ecosystems more effectively.
Meritech Capital Partners, renowned for its early support of industry giants such as Snowflake and Datadog, joins GIC as a co-investor in this funding round. Atlan’s latest funding round, led by GIC and Meritech Capital, has taken the company’s valuation to over $750 million. With contributions from existing investors like Salesforce Ventures and Peak XV Partners, the five-year-old startup has now raised over $200 million.
The funding will enable Atlan to advance its platform further, which serves as a unified control plane for managing diverse data infrastructure, spanning from data platforms like Databricks to CRMs such as Salesforce 360.
By providing a cohesive solution for enterprises to navigate and govern their data ecosystems, Atlan aims to empower organizations to address the challenges of data chaos effectively and support enhanced data management practices.
Founded in 2020, Atlan serves as a comprehensive solution for organizing and contextualizing data assets within organizations. Co-founders Prukalpa Sankar and Varun Banka initiated the project as an internal endeavor for their previous startup, describing it as a central hub for data teams.
Atlan plans to allocate a portion of the funding to expand its presence and meet the growing demand for effective data organization in the era of AI. Co-founder Prukalpa Sankar emphasized the critical role of AI-ready data enriched with business context, trust, and security. Atlan aims to address this challenge by developing a comprehensive control plane for data and AI, integrating trust and context seamlessly into the digital landscape.
Sankar explained the platform’s foundational layer, the “Metadata Lakehouse,” which integrates seamlessly with various data tools and systems to synchronize metadata efficiently. This layer encompasses various metadata types, including technical details, social usage information, operational insights, and compliance status.
Building upon this foundational layer, Atlan incorporates a trust layer that facilitates access management, data analytics, and classification. Additionally, the platform offers personalized modules for data discovery, business glossary creation, data product management, and no-code data lineage visualization.
These features empower both data and business teams to comprehend and collaborate effectively on organizational data, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making and problem-solving.
The company intends to enhance its product offerings by deepening integrations with existing cloud and data platforms, broadening the scope of active metadata management solutions, and innovating within data discovery and cataloging.
