Australian autonomous mapping company Emesent has secured US$17 million in new funding to accelerate the development of its AI-powered autonomy platform while expanding manufacturing and global operations. The funding comprises a US$7 million venture debt facility from the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC), Australia’s sovereign investor in advanced manufacturing, alongside a US$10 million equity round supported by Main Sequence, QIC Ventures, Orion Resource Partners, Hostplus, and NGS Super.
The investment will be used to expand manufacturing at Emesent’s production facility in Wacol, Queensland, while accelerating development of Cortex AI, the company’s autonomy platform, and Aura, its cloud-based software for processing, visualizing, and analyzing three-dimensional mapping data. The company, which employs 109 people across Australia, also plans to deepen its presence across international markets where demand for autonomous mapping technologies continues to grow.
Founded in 2018 as a spinout from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Emesent has established itself as a provider of autonomous mapping solutions capable of operating in environments where GPS signals are unavailable or unreliable. Its flagship Hovermap platform is currently deployed across more than 200 mine sites worldwide, supporting major mining companies including Rio Tinto, BHP, and Glencore, while its broader product portfolio serves customers across mining, architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), defense, and critical infrastructure in more than 40 countries.
While Emesent initially built its reputation through autonomous LiDAR mapping hardware, the company’s latest investment reflects a broader strategy to evolve into an AI-driven software platform.
The company’s portfolio now includes the Hovermap STX LiDAR payload, the GX1 all-in-one SLAM, RTK, and 360-degree imagery scanner, Aura cloud software, and Cortex AI, which together are designed to automate data capture, navigation, and analysis in hazardous or GPS-denied environments.
While conversing with AsiaTechDaily, Charles Miller, CEO of Emesent, said the company’s commercial strategy has changed significantly over the past several years.
“In terms of business growth, the biggest shift has been moving from a direct hardware sales model to a channel partner model. We’re now working through larger, more established partners across the US and EMEA to scale distribution.
We’ve also expanded beyond our traditional mining focus and now have clients across construction and defense sectors. The product portfolio has expanded significantly too, most notably with GX1, our integrated mobile SLAM, RTK and 360-degree scanner, alongside continued development of Cortex and Aura. Commercially, this partner-led expansion into new geographies is the core growth story since 2022, not organic direct sales growth on its own.”
The shift illustrates a broader trend within industrial robotics, where companies are increasingly complementing specialized hardware with software platforms capable of generating recurring revenue and supporting wider enterprise deployments.
Artificial intelligence has become a defining theme across the robotics industry, but companies often use the term to describe a wide range of technologies, from basic automation to advanced decision-making systems.
For Emesent, Cortex AI represents a distinct evolution of its autonomy capabilities.
Explaining the company’s product architecture during the conversation with AsiaTechDaily, Miller said existing products already incorporate sophisticated autonomy software, while Cortex AI is being developed as a broader platform that can extend beyond Emesent’s own hardware.
“Cortex is our embedded autonomy and mapping software, present on every Hovermap and GX1 unit. On Hovermap it delivers autonomous flight and navigation, obstacle detection, route planning, GPS-denied operation. On both Hovermap and GX1 it also powers the SLAM-based mapping engine itself, the core technology that makes accurate, real-time 3D mapping possible in GPS-denied environments.
Aura is the companion software for processing, visualizing and sharing that captured data, with Aura Cloud enabling link-based sharing. Cortex AI is separate again. It’s a forthcoming licensing model that extends our autonomy intelligence to third-party hardware platforms, distinct from what’s already running on clients’ existing systems.”
That distinction signals a strategic shift from delivering complete robotics systems toward licensing AI-powered autonomy capabilities that can operate across a broader ecosystem of industrial hardware. Similar transitions are increasingly being seen across robotics companies seeking to separate software value from hardware deployments.
Beyond supporting Emesent’s growth, the investment represents a milestone for Australia’s broader deep-tech ecosystem. The NRFC’s participation marks its first venture debt investment in a deep-tech company, demonstrating an alternative funding approach for commercial-stage technology businesses that require capital-intensive manufacturing without immediate equity dilution.
According to the NRFC, robotics and autonomous systems have become strategic industries for Australia’s manufacturing ambitions, particularly as governments place greater emphasis on sovereign capability across defense, critical infrastructure, and advanced industrial technologies.

Returning investor Main Sequence, which backed Emesent during its Seed and Series A rounds, also reaffirmed its confidence in the company’s long-term strategy.

Emesent’s latest funding reflects a wider evolution taking place across industrial robotics. While early generations of robotics companies often competed primarily through specialized hardware, the next phase of growth is increasingly being driven by software, artificial intelligence, and cloud-based intelligence that extends the capabilities of physical machines.
For sectors such as mining, construction, defense, and critical infrastructure, autonomous navigation and real-time spatial intelligence are becoming increasingly important as organizations seek to improve worker safety, reduce operational costs, and operate in environments that are difficult or dangerous for human access.
By investing in Cortex AI, Aura, and expanded manufacturing, Emesent is positioning itself to capture that opportunity. At the same time, the company’s funding highlights Australia’s growing ambition to commercialize homegrown robotics research into globally competitive industrial technology businesses. As governments and institutional investors continue to prioritize advanced manufacturing and sovereign technology capabilities, companies that combine robotics, AI, and scalable software platforms are likely to play an increasingly important role in the next generation of industrial automation.
