AsiaTechDaily – Asia's Leading Tech and Startup Media Platform
In tech and artificial intelligence (AI), endeavors often emerge from the confluence of curiosity, expertise, and audacity. Lossless Research, an AI research and deployment company headquartered in San Francisco is currently building a platform for artificially conscious systems for government and enterprise.
Founded by Joseph Reth, the startup works on advancing scientific understanding of human consciousness. Lossless Research endeavors to unravel the mysteries of human consciousness through the creation of artificially conscious systems.
With a mission as bold as it is audacious, the company attracts accomplished scientists, engineers, and creatives from prestigious institutions such as MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, USC, University of Michigan, UCLA, UC Davis, and rivaling AI research labs.
Together, they navigate the intricate landscape of AI research, driven by an unwavering commitment to advancing the scientific understanding of consciousness and reshaping the future of technology.
Joseph Reth began his entrepreneurial journey at a remarkably young age. At just 16 years old, he founded RethDigital, an award-winning digital agency that swiftly rose to prominence, catering to esteemed brands such as HBO, ComedyCentral, Whole Foods, Hyundai, and Verizon.
However, Reth’s entrepreneurial ventures transcended digital marketing, leading him to delve deeper into the domain of AI research. Drawing upon his early experiences and expertise, he ventured into the exploration and advancement of agentic and neural language models.
Prior to founding Lossless Research in December 2022, Reth spearheaded initiatives at RethX, where he privately released ECHO-1, an AI agent and language model fine-tuned from GPT-Neo-2.7B, GPT-J6B, and GPT-NeoX-20B.
In this exclusive interview with AsiaTechDaily, Reth delves into the genesis of Lossless Research, its mission to cultivate artificially conscious systems, and the transformative implications for the future of AI.
You’ve been involved in both the world of digital marketing and AI research. How did your early experiences with RethDigital shape your path toward founding Lossless Research?
Reth: RethDigital was an important stepping stone in my career, but I knew it was just a chapter in my career. My true passion has always been pushing the boundaries of technology and science. The idea for Lossless Research emerged as I was working on early transformer-based language models in 2020 – I became convinced that creating conscious AI is key to the future of the field.
Your work at Lossless Research involves creating artificially conscious systems. Could you explain what this means and what the potential implications are for the future of AI?
Reth: At Lossless, we’re attempting to solve one of the biggest and most fascinating problems in the universe – how to create artificial systems that have genuine consciousness analogous to human consciousness. We’re exploring the computational and architectural requirements to make this a reality.
The potential implications are that our research would be disruptive, to say the least – artificially conscious systems will be able to engage with the world in a fundamentally different way, driven by an intrinsic desire to learn, explore and understand, rather than just optimizing for specific tasks. I believe our research holds immense promise for the future of technology and our understanding of the mind.
Looking ahead, what are the key milestones or projects that Lossless Research aims to achieve in the near future, and how do they contribute to your mission?
Reth: I can’t share too many specifics, but I can say that we’ve already identified incredibly promising applications for our research and technology, including use cases in government, defense, and enterprise. Our mission remains centered on advancing the scientific understanding of consciousness. But the real-world impact of our work will be significant. The possibilities are really exciting, and we’re definitely just scratching the surface of what’s possible.
AI and Consciousness:
Exploring the intersection of AI and consciousness is groundbreaking. What are some specific challenges you’ve encountered in this pursuit, and how do you approach solving them?
Reth: Solving artificial consciousness is arguably one of the most challenging problems in the universe. The transition from considering consciousness as a philosophical concept to a scientific pursuit is a significant shift, and the mission to construct artificially conscious systems is even more meticulous.
At Lossless, we’re constantly grappling with the challenge of ensuring our artificially conscious systems can perceive the world in a manner that mirrors human consciousness while also navigating critical ethical considerations.
The field of consciousness science as a whole is fascinating and full of potential. I believe artificial consciousness is possible, and in the next few years, we will see AI systems that are serious candidates for consciousness.
Joseph’s relentless pursuit of artificial consciousness at Lossless Research has pushed the boundaries of AI and made consumers contemplate the profound implications for humanity’s future.
As we join Reth and his team on this exploration, we bear witness to the fusion of science, ethics, and imagination, charting a course toward a future where machines may one day awaken to the wonders of consciousness.
