ST Engineering to Open Singapore Centre for Autonomous Systems Cybersecurity in 2027

The centre will assess vulnerabilities in autonomous vehicles, drones and mobile robots before deployment, targeting critical infrastructure, smart city and industrial operators as Singapore strengthens its approach to securing physical AI.

ST Engineering plans to open a Transparency Centre in Singapore in the first quarter of 2027 to assess t he cybersecurity of autonomous vehicles, drones and mobile robots before they are deployed in real-world environments. Announced on October 13, the initiative will combine independent security assessments with vulnerability analysis and targeted cybersecurity upgrades as organizations increasingly integrate autonomous systems into business-critical operations.

The move comes as Singapore steps up efforts to address the security risks associated with physical AI. As autonomous systems become more connected and operate in increasingly complex environments, vulnerabilities in software, firmware and supply chains could affect not only data security but also the reliability of physical operations. ST Engineering’s planned Centre aims to help organizations identify and address these weaknesses before deployment.

Unlike conventional IT systems, autonomous platforms combine software, hardware, sensors and communications with capabilities that influence physical operations. A compromised component or vulnerable software update could affect a machine’s behavior, while connected systems may introduce risks that extend beyond a single device.

Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) highlighted these concerns on October 13, announcing plans to develop guidance for securing autonomous robotic systems from design and procurement through testing, deployment, operations, monitoring and updates. The agency has emphasized that cybersecurity must be considered alongside AI safety, functional safety and operational risk as autonomous technologies become more widely deployed. ST Engineering’s planned Centre will focus on identifying hidden vulnerabilities, security weaknesses and software supply chain risks. Its assessments will align with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Cybersecurity Framework, which provides organizations with a structure for managing cybersecurity risks.

A key capability will be binary analysis technology that examines software binaries and firmware without requiring access to proprietary source code. This could help organizations assess software embedded in third-party platforms even when the underlying source code is unavailable to them. The Centre will also support remediation through cybersecurity upgrades. These include stronger hardware roots of trust for systems handling sensitive data and improved encryption for stored data and communications. The aim is to help customers strengthen their systems rather than stop at identifying vulnerabilities.

“As AI becomes embedded in critical systems, trust can no longer be assumed. It must be engineered, tested and assured. Our Transparency Centre will provide independent assurance and rigorous cybersecurity validation to help customers verify that their autonomous platforms and cyber-physical systems are secure, resilient and ready for their intended operational use,” said Goh Eng Choon, President, Cyber, ST Engineering.

Critical Infrastructure and Industry Among Target Customers

In an exclusive response to AsiaTechDaily, ST Engineering identified critical infrastructure operators, smart city operators, industrial and manufacturing enterprises, and technology solution providers as the customer segments likely to benefit most from the Centre’s services. The company expects demand from organizations deploying autonomous platforms and cyber-physical systems in business-critical and highly regulated environments. It also sees an opportunity to support customers across Asia as autonomous systems become more widely adopted.

ST Engineering said its focus would be on helping organizations identify and address material vulnerabilities, strengthen operational resilience and build confidence in deploying these technologies. The Centre draws on the group’s existing expertise in securing critical information infrastructure and protecting business-critical data across information technology, operational technology and cloud environments. It will also bring together ST Engineering’s capabilities in robotics, autonomous technologies and mission-critical systems for smart cities, with the stated goal of helping customers assess, strengthen and manage their platforms throughout their lifecycle. The company has not disclosed specific performance targets for the Centre’s first 12 to 24 months, initial customer commitments or projected revenue. Its commercial impact will therefore become clearer after the facility opens and organizations begin using its services.

Singapore Builds Its Physical AI Ecosystem

The Centre is being established as Singapore explores broader deployment of autonomous systems in public and operational environments. In May 2026, JTC announced plans for a robotics testbed in Punggol Digital District, where robots are expected to be tested for applications including food and parcel delivery, cleaning and security patrols. These initiatives illustrate the growing need to evaluate how autonomous systems perform beyond controlled testing environments.

For ST Engineering, the challenge extends beyond identifying technical vulnerabilities. Its planned services include targeted rectification and cybersecurity upgrades intended to improve resilience throughout a system’s operational lifecycle. However, the company has not detailed the Centre’s assessment procedures, specific testing criteria or any certification it may offer. Alignment with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework should not, on its own, be interpreted as a guarantee that an autonomous platform is safe or free of vulnerabilities.

ST Engineering showcased the planned Centre’s assurance services, alongside AI-enabled cybersecurity services and quantum security innovations, at GovWare 2026 in Singapore from October 13 to 15. The group operates across aerospace, smart city, defence and public security markets, serving customers in more than 100 countries. It reported revenue exceeding S$12 billion in 2025.

As autonomous technologies enter increasingly sensitive environments, the value of independent assurance will depend on whether assessments uncover meaningful weaknesses and lead to effective remediation. The Centre’s planned opening in 2027 will provide an opportunity to evaluate how its approach works in practice. For organizations deploying autonomous systems, the central question will be whether security measures can keep pace with the technology and remain effective as platforms, software and operating environments evolve.

Quick Takeaways
  • New cybersecurity centre: ST Engineering plans to open its Transparency Centre in Singapore in Q1 2027 to assess autonomous platforms before real-world deployment.
  • Focus on autonomous systems: The Centre will assess autonomous vehicles, drones, mobile robots and other cyber-physical systems for vulnerabilities and security weaknesses.
  • Advanced security assessments: Its capabilities will include binary and firmware analysis, software supply chain risk assessment, and targeted cybersecurity upgrades without requiring access to proprietary source code.
  • Target industries: Critical infrastructure operators, smart city operators, industrial and manufacturing enterprises, and technology solution providers are among the expected customer segments.
  • Regional ambitions: ST Engineering sees opportunities to support customers across Asia as autonomous systems become more widely adopted.
  • Singapore’s broader strategy: The announcement comes as Singapore develops guidance for securing autonomous robotic systems throughout their lifecycle.
