This insightful discussion delved into the vital role that investors play in nurturing and scaling startups across Southeast Asia, offering valuable guidance to entrepreneurs and industry professionals.
Victor Chua’s contributions to the venture capital space in Southeast Asia were honored by AsiaTechDaily as the Investor of the Month. With his extensive experience, from managing early-stage funds at Gobi Partners to leading Vynn Capital, Chua has been active in nurturing startups across the region.
Victor Chua shared his extensive knowledge on how investors can influence the growth path of early-stage startups. His experience, ranging from his tenure at Gobi Partners to his leadership at Vynn Capital, has equipped him with a deep understanding of the startup ecosystem in Southeast Asia.
During the event, Chua emphasized that while fundraising is often viewed as a straightforward path to growth, it is crucial for founders to approach it with a clear understanding of its implications. He stated:
“Most of the time, in the hundreds of companies that we have seen, founders are raising money because everyone else is raising money. Founders are raising money because their competitors are raising money. But at the end of the day, fundraising shouldn’t be treated as a source of revenue. There’s a price you pay when you bring in VCs—you’re giving up shares, control, and influence. All your decisions will be scrutinized. So, it’s important for founders to understand why you need to fundraise.”
Chua also provided valuable insights into sectors positive for growth in Southeast Asia. He highlighted the mobility and supply chain industries as particularly promising areas for innovation. According to Chua, these sectors offer unique opportunities for startups to make a significant impact and achieve substantial growth.
The interactive Q&A session was a highlight of the event. Attendees had the chance to ask Victor about various aspects of venture capital and startup scaling. Chua addressed questions with practical advice, shedding light on the nuances of building successful investor-founder relationships and the strategic use of investment to drive growth.
