Malaysia Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli has announced the upcoming launch of the Kuala Lumpur 20 (KL20) blueprint, scheduled for April 22 and 23 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The event will primarily focus on startups, aiming to bring together various stakeholders in the startup ecosystem, including investors, developers, and company owners.
The KL20 Summit 2024 plans to elevate Kuala Lumpur into the top 20 global startup hubs by 2030. Currently ranked in the top 47 globally, Kuala Lumpur’s ascent in the startup ecosystem is expected to be catalyzed by the initiatives outlined in the KL20 blueprint.
Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli expressed the importance of the event, highlighting the launch of a new investment fund and the entry of several investment firms into the Malaysian market. Additionally, multiple unicorns are expected to announce the opening of research and development centers in Malaysia during the summit.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will spearhead the KL20 summit by launching the KL20 action paper, which outlines reforms supporting convergence among key stakeholders to take Malaysia’s startup tech sector to new heights.
During the soft launch of the KL20 event at Parliament, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli announced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would inaugurate the event and unveil the KL20 Action Paper, detailing over 20 transformative reforms to revitalize Malaysia’s startup ecosystem.
KL20 aims to position Malaysia as an attractive destination for startups for the growth of the local talent pool and economy. Rafizi stressed the importance of radical initiatives to nurture the startup pipeline, targeting funders, founders, and talent.
The event sends a clear message to the global community that Malaysia is open to doing business in the digital and technology sector.
Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation Chang Lih Kang advocated establishing a streamlined single-window initiative to provide investors and talent easy access to the entire ecosystem, aiming to attract more venture capital firms and startups to Malaysia.
The KL20 Summit 2024 anticipates over 1,000 participants, including international investors and startups, converging to explore opportunities and discuss the future of entrepreneurship and innovation.
Distinguished industry figures such as Jenny Lee from GGV Capital, Geraldine Andrieux Gustin from DeepTech and The Hive, and Qi Bin from China Investment Corp are expected to delve into the factors influencing the entrepreneurial landscape. The summit aims to showcase Malaysia’s potential as a conducive environment for startups, particularly in critical sectors such as manufacturing, agritech, cleantech, and Islamic finance.
