The fifth edition of HPE CodeWars, India’s largest coding competition for school students, concluded this week with more than 23,000 participants from across the country and abroad. Hosted by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) in collaboration with Codingal, the event continues to grow in scale and global reach.

Open to students in grades 8 through 12, the annual event featured a three-hour coding challenge that tested participants’ algorithmic thinking and problem-solving skills. The 2025 competition saw real-time evaluation of thousands of code submissions, with peak concurrent assessments surpassing 700.

Participants represented a broad geographic spectrum, including major Indian cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai. The contest also attracted international students from over 100 countries, including the United Kingdom, Kenya, Mauritius, Nepal, Nigeria, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. Organizers highlighted this as a sign of CodeWars’ expanding global footprint.

Top Performers Recognized

The competition recognized several students for their standout performances:

  • Champion: Purbayon Sarkar (Grade 12), South Point High School, Kolkata – awarded an HP Victus Gaming Laptop
  • First Runner-Up: Jayden Jeswin Raj (Grade 12), Vels Vidyashram, Chennai – awarded an HP Chromebook
  • Second Runner-Up: Samik Goyal (Grade 10), DAV Public School, Patiala – awarded an HP Series 5 FHD Monitor

In addition to the top three, the top 10 participants received mechanical gaming keyboards and mice in recognition of their performance.

A Platform for Future Tech Talent

Speaking on the importance of such events, Codingal Co-founder Vivek Prakash emphasized the role of coding competitions in preparing students for a future shaped by artificial intelligence and digital transformation.

“Competitions like HPE CodeWars go beyond just testing coding skills—they help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities,” Prakash said. “As AI literacy becomes as fundamental as reading and math, it’s essential to create opportunities like this for students to build future-ready skills.”

HPE CodeWars is part of a broader initiative by HPE and Codingal to foster interest in technology among school students and encourage the development of technical capabilities at a young age. The competition aims to serve as a launchpad for students to explore potential careers in STEM and software development.

Building on the momentum of this year’s edition, HPE and Codingal plan to expand the program further in future iterations. Upcoming editions are expected to feature new formats and challenges to continue engaging a growing community of young coders worldwide.

HPE CodeWars is held annually and remains a key event in India’s student coding calendar, promoting engagement with real-world programming problems and collaborative learning among young technologists.
