ByteDance, the parent company of the popular video service provider TikTok, has agreed to invest in a unit of Indonesia’s GoTo Group and collaborate on an online shopping service with Tokopedia. Despite an informal agreement already in place, the final intricacies of the alliance are subject to ongoing discussions and may undergo adjustments before an official announcement.
The strategic partnership supports cooperation rather than direct competition between TikTok and the Indonesian platform. While details are still being negotiated and regulatory approval is pending, the collaboration aims to revive Indonesia’s ‘TikTok Shop’. It suspended operations on October 4 due to non-compliance with local regulations related to online business licensing, advertising, and supervision. An official announcement of the partnership’s specifics is expected as early as next week.
Apart from investment, the discussions between TikTok and GoTo explore prospects of collaborative initiatives, including forming a joint venture that could give rise to a new e-commerce platform. While speculation about TikTok’s intent to re-establish its e-commerce presence in Indonesia emerged in late October, both companies have maintained a guarded silence on the specifics of their discussions.
Despite these positive developments, according to sources, the agreement between TikTok Shop and Tokopedia is contingent on regulatory approval and remains susceptible to potential setbacks.
However, TikTok Shop’s growth in Indonesia encountered hurdles against competitors like Sea Ltd. and Tokopedia, fueled by complaints from local merchants. Exploring local partnerships could serve as a blueprint for TikTok’s expansion into other markets, such as Malaysia, where the government has indicated a willingness to scrutinize the influence of foreign players like TikTok.
Recent rumors hinted at discussions between TikTok and GOTO, suggesting a potential investment and the possibility of a joint venture to establish a new e-commerce platform. Representatives from TikTok and GOTO declined to comment.
Indonesia’s 2022 e-commerce GMV reached approximately $51.9 billion USD, and ‘TikTok Shop’ contributed 5% to this total, equivalent to roughly 3 million packages shipped daily. The collaboration between TikTok and GoTo poses a dual dynamic for GoTo, as it involves the risk of supporting a formidable online retail competitor.
This investment is crucial for TikTok Shop since ByteDance‘s rapidly expanding video services subsidiary ventured into online shopping across continents, from the US to Europe.
