AsiaTechDaily – Asia's Leading Tech and Startup Media Platform
The Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA) drives technological innovation through its Open Innovation Platform (OIP), a national initiative designed to connect corporates with startups, technology providers, and research institutes. The platform enables businesses to identify challenges and crowdsource digital solutions, fostering a vibrant digital ecosystem.
IMDA’s broader mission includes strengthening digitalization across industries, building a globally competitive digital talent hub, and ensuring a safe and inclusive digital society. The agency provides businesses with access to resources, funding opportunities, and training programs to help them leverage digital transformation effectively.
One of IMDA’s key initiatives is the Spark GenAI program, launched in collaboration with DBS and Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG). This program aims to equip local SMEs with Generative AI capabilities to enhance productivity and innovation. Additionally, the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) has introduced an innovation challenge to encourage the development of cutting-edge data protection solutions.
The OIP operates on a structured model, where IMDA and industry experts assist corporations in diagnosing business challenges and grouping them into Innovation Calls. These calls are launched quarterly, allowing businesses to tap into a global network of over 12,000 solution providers. The OIP offers consultancy, crowdsourcing, and marketing services at no cost, with corporates required only to provide prize money for selected solutions.
Startups, technology providers, and research institutions are encouraged to participate in the OIP. Corporates can collaborate with OIP consultants to refine their challenge statements and set financial incentives for digital solutions. Challenge solvers must possess strong digital expertise and be willing to co-develop solutions with potential business partners.
The platform provides a discovery engine—a self-help digital tool that enables corporates to efficiently find relevant tech providers based on industry, technology type, and location. This streamlines the matching of businesses with suitable digital innovators, accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies.
By participating in the OIP, corporations gain access to solutions tailored to their business needs. Startups benefit from exposure to potential clients, clear problem statements, and financial incentives that serve as non-equity seed funding. Successful solutions can be further developed, validated, and commercialized through strategic collaborations with industry leaders.
As digital transformation becomes increasingly vital for business growth, IMDA’s OIP plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between corporate challenges and innovative solutions.
With ongoing Innovation Calls and dedicated support from IMDA, the OIP remains a key driver of digital innovation, ensuring that businesses, startups, and tech providers can collectively shape the future of Singapore’s digital economy.
